Freetown, Sierra Leone – 23 June 2026 – The Ministry of Public Administration and Political Affairs, in partnership with the Public Service Reform Unit (PSRU), has formally recognised outstanding public servants whose dedication and professionalism have significantly contributed to Sierra Leone’s national development.
The awards ceremony, held at the Miatta Conference Centre in Brookfields, Freetown, celebrated individuals whose commitment to public service, leadership, and innovation has helped strengthen the country’s public sector and improve the lives of citizens.
A standout recipient was Inspector General of Police (IGP) William Fayia Sellu, who received recognition for his exemplary leadership and unwavering dedication to national service. The honour underscores his distinguished career, marked by professionalism, integrity, and significant contributions to law enforcement and national security.
IGP Sellu joined the Sierra Leone Police (SLP) in 1993 as a university graduate. Over the years, he has served in several key positions, including Chief Security Officer to the late President Dr Ahmad Tejan Kabbah, Director of Crime Services, and Local Unit Commander of the Ross Road, Goderich, and Kissy Divisions. He also served as Commandant of the Sierra Leone Peacekeeping and Law Enforcement Academy (SILEA), where he played a vital role in capacity building and the professional development of police personnel.
In 2022, he was appointed Inspector General of Police by President Julius Maada Bio. Since his appointment, his transformative leadership and reform initiatives have positioned the Sierra Leone Police for greater efficiency, professionalism, and public trust.
Addressing the gathering, Chief Minister Dr David Moinina Sengeh reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to reforming Sierra Leone’s public sector. He urged public servants to embrace innovation, professionalism, and accountability—values that are essential for building an effective and responsive public service that benefits both present and future generations.
Hon. Amara Kallon, Minister of Public Administration and Political Affairs, highlighted Sierra Leone’s participation in World Public Service Day, a United Nations initiative established to recognise excellence in public service. He called on public servants to serve with honesty, compassion, and a citizen-centred approach.
The two-day event brought together government officials, policymakers, development partners, and other stakeholders to discuss key issues affecting public sector development and to explore opportunities for further reforms.
The recognition of IGP William Fayia Sellu reflects the ongoing transformation within the Sierra Leone Police, highlighting its evolution from a traditional police force into a professional, accountable, and service-oriented institution committed to restoring and maintaining public confidence.
