Freetown, Sierra Leone, 6 June 2026 – The Joint Security Forces emerged champions of the two-day Peace Gala Football Tournament after securing a hard-fought 2–1 victory over the Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) in an exciting final played at the SLFA Academy Complex, Kingtom.
The tournament, organised to promote peace, unity and collaboration among key national stakeholders, brought together teams representing the Joint Security Forces, the Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ), Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) and the Bike Riders Union (BRU). The competition attracted a large and enthusiastic crowd throughout the two-day event.
Addressing players and spectators at the final match, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Mr William Fayia Sellu commended all participating teams for embracing the true spirit of the competition. He emphasised that the Peace Gala had been organised not to create divisions but to strengthen unity, cooperation and mutual understanding among institutions and organisations that play vital roles in national development.
The IGP noted that, despite belonging to different sectors, all participants share a common responsibility to promote peace, security and stability across Sierra Leone.
He further stressed that while football naturally produces winners and losers, every participant should regard themselves as victorious because the primary objective of the tournament had been achieved.
"Football brings people together, reduces tension and promotes unity. Our differences can be resolved through peaceful engagement and mutual understanding," the IGP stated.
He announced that the champions would receive the Gold Trophy and a cash prize of Le10,000, while the runners-up would be awarded the Silver Trophy and Le5,000. He also encouraged players to compete with discipline, respect and sportsmanship.
The IGP further proposed that future engagements among stakeholders should include additional social activities aimed at strengthening relationships and fostering national cohesion.
Before kick-off, the IGP, accompanied by members of the Police Management Board, senior representatives of other security agencies and distinguished stakeholders, inspected the teams, exchanged greetings with the players and performed the ceremonial kick-off.
Representing the Chief of Defence Staff, the Army Chief of Staff, Major General Kemoh Sesay, congratulated all participating teams on their impressive performances throughout the tournament. He underscored that the competition had no losers, as its ultimate purpose was to promote peace, unity and collaboration among Sierra Leoneans.
"Sport brings people together and strengthens relationships. A victory for the security sector is a victory for all," he remarked.
Major General Sesay commended the leadership of the Sierra Leone Police for organising such an initiative and encouraged the continuation of similar programmes that promote national unity and peaceful coexistence.
At the conclusion of the match, the IGP, Major General Kemoh Sesay, representatives of SLAJ, Civil Society Organisations, the Bike Riders Union and other stakeholders presented medals, trophies and cash prizes to both the runners-up and the champions in recognition of their participation and achievements.
The successful conclusion of the Peace Gala Football Tournament reaffirmed the commitment of all stakeholders to promoting peace, unity and social cohesion through sport and constructive engagement.
